The Bombay Municipal Corporation, BMC, has
finally finalized a contractor for cleaning up the Mulund dump of garbage .The
project will take five years to complete and the resultant land is expected to
be used primarily for public amenities.
According to a Civic officer this move will
shore up property prices in the surrounding areas.
The contract includes a license to sell the
energy and gas that will be generated from the dumping grounds organic waste.
The firm can sell organic bricks made from the debris and plastic waste. The
resultant bricks can be used for landfills.
According to a senior official from BMC the
plan will soon be placed before the civic standing committee which compromises
corporators. The work will start only after the committee’s approval, as is
mandatory under the law.
Mumbai generates 7,100 tons of waste a day,
which is dumped at three grounds within the city. Most of the garbage goes to Deonar
and Kanjurmarg. Mulund still gets a portion of the garbage, though its closure
had been decided on years ago.
“We have shortlisted the lowest bidder for
the work,” said additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee. Prakash
Constrowell quoted Rs 558 crore, 11 % less than the estimated cost of Rs 630
crore.
The
firm is engaged in similar work in Nashik. “This is for the first time that
biomining is being used at such a large scale (to treat garbage) anywhere in
the world,” Mukherjee said.
Biomining is used at garbage dumps to
neutralise the ground’s toxicity on account of the presence of metals like
mercury and lead.
This seems to be good news for individuals
and corporates who have invested in Mulund as this move will definitely see the
property prices going northwards.
The real estate market has been sluggish
for some time now and it is expected that this move will give the required
impetus so as to enable real estate in Mulund to rise and shine and propel
itself towards futuristic growth.
